JONES – John Paul Jones passed away at home on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Born April 21, 1928 and raised in Midway, PA, the son of Merille J. Jones and Letitia Scott Jones. At age 17, he received the Eagle Scout Award. He served in the U.S. Army 1946-47 and in Korea 1952-54. He received a BS in Business Administration from Kent State University in 1952 and a MA in Public Administration from UNM in 1974. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty; daughters, Lisa and husband Phillip Ashcraft, Wendy Jones of Sonoma, CA, and Betsy Jones and fiancé Alex Argeanas. He was a wonderful “Pop Pop” to Kaitlyn, Dana, Emily and John Phillip Ashcraft, and a loving husband and father. His beloved son, John Paul Jones Jr., preceded him in death in 1992. In 1955, Mr. Jones became a Special Agent, United States Secret Service. He was assigned to offices in St. Louis, Washington, San Antonio, Austin and Louisville. During the Johnson administration, he served at the White House and the LBJ Ranch. He was Agent in Charge of the Albuquerque office from 1961-66 and from 1971 until retirement in 1979. During his 25-year career, he was involved in Criminal Investigations as well as protection of Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon, foreign heads of State and Presidential candidates and nominees. He enjoyed aviation history, woodworking, travel and photography. Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 6, 2004, at 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, Friday, March 5, 2004, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Cremation will follow. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, 1720 Louisiana NE, Suite 202, 87110. A special thanks to Dr. Pamela Fick, Rose Reese and the Lovelace Oncology and Hospice Staff for their kindness and support.
