William E. O'Brien, age 82, of Fairfield, beloved husband of the late Theresa Kokoruda O'Brien, passed away peacefully in his home Monday, February 20, 2012. Born in Bridgeport the son of the late Edward and Dorothy O'Brien, he had been a Fairfield resident for many years. Bill started with City Lumber in 1948 but had to go get his driver's license to get the job. He joined Stevenson Lumber in 1970. He had only two jobs but one very successful career in sales. He was an active member of the National Housing Council, Fairfield Connecticut Home Builder's Association, Bellermine Mens Club at Fairfield Prep where he helped build and auction their first house for fund raising. He was Chairman of the Parents Association at Fairfield University. He was an active member of St Pius X Parish his entire life in Fairfield serving on countless fund raisers as chairman, worker, and doer. Mr. O'Brien was a Lt. Governor of the Fairfield Kiwanis Club and was awarded Distinguished Lt. Governor, Distinguished President and Outstanding New England District Kiwanian. He served two terms as Chairman on the Building Board of Appeals for the Town of Fairfield. More than anything, however, he enjoyed his grandkids and great grandkids with whom he shared with Terry, his wife of more than 60 years. Their marriage was a glowing example of a perfect love in an imperfect world. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Theresa who passed away on 9-12-11, his in-laws, Stephen and Mary Kokoruda, his brothers-in-law, Robert and Stephen Kokoruda and his sister-in-law Jean Kokoruda. He is survived by his son Robert O'Brien and his wife of 35 years, Andrea, their children and spouses, Erin and USAF Major Jeff Knowles, Adam and Jenni O'Brien, Elyse O'Brien, great grandchildren, Kelsey Knowles and Parker O'Brien, his brother Robert and sister-in-law, Patricia, his bothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Helen Zavada, Dan and Noreen Kokoruda, Florence Kokoruda along with many other nephews, nieces, cousins and family members.
He was a warm, funny, intelligent and witty man. All who got to know him liked him, loved him or admired him. He has joined his beloved wife and now rests in peace in a better place. We will miss him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. meeting directly at St. Pius X Church 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, March 2, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
