BETTY S. ATES Betty Scott Ates, 79, resident of 142 Crescent Road, widow of Thomas E. Ates, died February 19, 2009 at Hospice House. Born in Auburndale, FL, August 3, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Robert L. and Maggie Pugh Scott. She was a graduate of Auburndale High School and attended Florida State University where she met her future husband, Tom, in a marriage preparation class. They were married in 1948 and celebrated 60 years of marriage. Mrs. Ates was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Driftwood Garden Club and the Monsanto Bridge Club. She loved arts, crafts, playing bridge and writing poetry. She was a true friend and great role model to so many. A devoted wife and mother, she is survived by two daughters, Pam and husband Jim Holcombe of Irmo and Melonie Ates and husband Dan Gaither of Greer; two sons, Thomas Scott Ates of Jay, FL and Richard Ates of Greenwood; granddaughters, Heather and husband Bob Bundy of Beaufort, Hannah and husband Ty Merritt of Ladson, Teresa and husband Joe Viera of Pueblo, CO; a grandson, Chris and wife Lisa Holcombe of Columbia; four great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; one sister, Gaynelle Fletcher- McNabb of Pensacola, FL. and was predeceased by a sister, Ruby Deal Robinson.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 PM Saturday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens with Dr. Tony Hopkins and Dr. Thomas Cartledge officiating.
Honorary escort will be Jerry Latham, Jimmy Burns, Dave Free, Randy Free, Bill Free, Jean Baker and Mytrle Bailey.
The family is at the home in Kimbrook and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 1:00 to 2:00 Saturday afternoon.

The family would like to thank the staff of Ashley Transportation along with Dr. Robert Todd and Robin Kearney of Hospice Care of the Piedmont for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
