Audrey was born on February 26, 1923 in Houghton Lake at The Green House Farm where the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge now sets. Her parents were Nels Frederick Neilson and Mable Louise Dennison Tracey Neilson. Audrey grew up in the Houghton Lake area and graduated from the "Stone School" in Houghton Lake in 1942. She met John Forrest Alton from West Branch and they were married on June 20, 1942 in Detroit. She moved back to Houghton Lake as her husband went off to serve in WW II. When John returned the couple moved to Chicago, Florida, and North Carolina following John's work, before returning to Houghton Lake. Audrey was a homemaker and occasionally cleaned cottages and homes for people around the Houghton Lake area. She loved to bake, can, cook, and sew. She sewed lots of quilts for family and friends. Audrey was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Prudenville, 1556 W. Houghton Lake Drive Prudenville, MI 48651, she was a deaconess, president of the Missionary Fellowship, on the Missionary Committee, she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School for many years, and helped in the church nursery.
Surviving Mrs. Alton are her son - John (Rhonda) Alton Jr. of Prudenville; 4 daughters - Carolyn Curtis of Houghton Lake, Patricia (Gilbert) LaBay of Belmont, Cherrie (Richard) McNeilly of Lake, Cynthia Mae (Timmy) Patton of Cleveland, GA; eleven grandchildren; twenty eight great grandchildren; two great great granddaughters. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John F. Alton Sr., daughter, Vera Lynn Alton, great grandson, Bradley John LaBay, two brothers, Lawrence Tracey, and Frederick Neilson(Nelson), two sisters, Vera Nielsen and Florence Notter, nephew, William Nielson , niece, Lillian Mason, son-in-law, Ezra (Ty) Curtis, and her in-laws, Charles H. and Pearl (Martin) Alton..
Memorial services for Audrey Arlene Alton will be conducted at 1:00PM Saturday April 19, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Prudenville. Interment will be in Roscommon Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Audrey are asked to be directed to the family. Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel is serving the family.
