Dr. Phillip Bacon passed away at Grace Healthcare of Franklin, TN on June 13th, 2010. He was born July 10, 1922, in Cleveland, OH, to the late Hollis and Emma Bacon.
He is survived by his son Phillip Everett of Los Angeles, CA; and his daughter Laura Bacon Fraser of Franklin, TN; his sister and brother-in-law Marjory and W.T. Korb of Columbia, SC; his grandchildren Bobby Fraser and wife Jennifer of Brentwood, TN; and Dede Fraser and husband Hakan Holmberg of Paris, France; and his great-grand daughters Lillian, Annabelle, and Alice Fraser of Brentwood, TN.
He attended The Citadel prior to his service in the Navy during World War II. He received degrees from George Peabody College for Teachers at Vanderbilt University and held professorships at the University of Houston, the University of Washington, and Teachers College, Columbia University.
He was the author and/or editor of fifty-one books, ranging from the elementary level to college, a consultant to NASA at the Johnson Space Center, and was a member of the editorial advisory board of World Book Encyclopedia for nearly twenty years. He was a past president of the National Council for Geographic Education, and in 1974, received the NCGE Distinguished Service Award.
In 1966, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from George Peabody College for Teachers of Vanderbilt University and was past president of the college’s Alumni Association. He was a Fellow of both the Explorers Club and the Royal Geographical Society of Great Britain. His biography appears in Leaders of American Geography, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World.
