Guestbook for Dr. Phillip Bacon Showing 1 - 10 of 19 entries.

I was sorry to learn late of Phil's passing. We have been exchanging holiday cards for many years following our collaboration on several series of elementary social studies textbooks for Harcourt. I always enjoyed seeing Dr. Bacon at his best, conducting workshops for an enthralled audience of classroom teachers. His contributions to education make him immortal. My condolences to all family members. I will miss him, too.

I am sorry that I am too late in finding information about Dr. Bacon to have told him directly. I was a student of his at the University of Washington. I was a Geography major with an elementary education minor, and I really wanted to be a teacher. One of his courses that was most significant to me was Historical Geography. He made each area that we studied come alive through his descriptions. I have often tried to emulate his enthusiasm while teaching my own students. His work was entertaining while being very informative. I will be forever grateful for the gift that he shared with me.

Ms. Fraser, have sent a card via snail mail. Your father was a fantastic educator, role model and geographer. It was truly a privilege to have participated in The New Mexico Geographic Alliance with him!
Please share our sympathy and appreciation for his excellence with all your family.

It was a great honor for me as a visiting faculty member in geography education to work with Phil at the U. of Washington and to collaborate with him in writing a geography textbook. He was a delightful person and a superb geography teacher and speaker. He was a master story teller whose true geography stories captivated his students and other audiences.

My enthusiasm for geography began as a child. My devotion to spreading the word began with Phillip Bacon. As a member of the New Mexico Geographic Alliance, I have been both entertained and informed by his adventures. He was truly an example of a fine gentleman. I am enriched by having spent time with him. My deepest and most profound sympathy to his family and those he considered friends.

Dear Family, Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We knew Phil through his wife, Sandy Sullivan Bacon, and enjoyed our visits with both of them! I, Fran, also took one of Phil's historical geography classes offered here in GJ and it was one of the best I've ever had. How fortunate we were to have known Phil. Love, The Borns

Dr. Bacon was my professor at U of Houston. He was an inspiring teacher, role model, and friend. I am honored that we remained friends for more than 30 years. He will be missed. His St. Francis Prayer speaks of who he was and how he will be remembered.

I wish to express my condolences to family members. Your father and grandfather made a huge difference in my life. I first met him in 1968 and he convinced me that I needed to do my doctoral work with him at the University of Washington. I made that decision and he continued to be a wonderful mentor over the 4+ decades that followed. Following the years of the student/professor relationship, we often worked together at conferences, summer institutes, and on K-12 school textbooks. He always took time to provide support, advice, and friendship up to the end of his life. He has been a role model over the years and he will continue to guide and influence my interactions with my own students.

Our sincere sympathies to the whole family in your loss of such a great father and family member. We only got to be in his company for a short time at Brighton Gardens. However, we always enjoyed our visits with him. He was always so pleasant and knowledgeable. My father-in-law, Bill Peters, became a good friend to Dr. Phil during their times there together. We all send our condolences and sorry we did not know in time to see you in person. He will be missed.

Blessings,

I'd like to add that even though Professor Bacon lived in Tennessee, check out that denim shirt he's wearing - The Lone Star State of Texas is over his pocket! "T for Texas, T for Tennessee!"

It was also important to me that I pass along that after taking that first geography class from Dr. Bacon, I signed up for every class he had during the next four years, for which I was eligible. He made such an impact on me and my later teaching style, more than any method of education course. In fact, Dr. Bacon is the only professor I even remember from my UH days of 35 years ago. Now THAT'S impressive.
